It’s officially summer and it’s time to ensure you keep your eyes protected from the risks of UV exposure and other summertime dangers.
Here are some tips to keep your eyes safe in the sun:
Buy glasses with 100% UV protection. If your sunglasses don’t offer 100% UV protection to guard your eyes from harmful UV damage, they may be resulting in more harm than good. Not to fear, sufficient UV blockage doesn’t mean a higher price – plenty of more affordable products give complete UV blockage.
Wear larger shades. When selecting shades, think big. Make sure to opt for shades with wraparound frames and wide lenses.
Wear a broad protective hat or visor. While shades are a good first UV barrier, a large hat will give you the extra protection you need to shade your eyes from harmful UV rays.
Sport sunglasses when the sun is hidden. Even when you don’t feel the sun shining, harmful UV light is still able to penetrate the clouds and do damage to your eyes. Don’t be fooled by a cloudy day.
Keep an emergency pair of sunglasses. It’s always good to be ready for an accidental mishap. Better to be safe than sorry.
Drink enough. It’s important to keep your eyes hydrated. Consume at least 8 cups of water a day to avoid dehydrated eyes and skin.
Stay indoors during the heat of the day. Stay indoors as much as possible particularly between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is at its strongest and the highest levels of UV are in the atmosphere.
Consider purchasing polarized lenses. Polarized lenses minimize the glare from reflective surfaces such as water. Perfect for a day at the beach or pool, they offer more comfort during outdoor activities.
During outdoor activities such as riding a motorcycle, watching fireworks or camping, be sure to safeguard your eyes as necessary to avoid injury.
Be careful with sunscreen. If applied too close to the eyes it can enter the eye and cause irritation and burning.
